I am trained and experienced in the Assessment and Treatment of a wide range of Psychological Problems, and Personal Development.

My areas of speciality include:

Anxiety

Treatment offered for Panic Attacks, Agoraphobia, Social/Performance Anxiety, Generalised Anxiety, Specific Phobias, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Hoarding.

Regardless of the nature of you fear, with treatment you will recover and enter the world armed with knowledge that will enable you to monitor, challenge and calm your fears.

Depression

We all know what it is like to be sad and miserable.  It is normal for moods to go up and down from day to day, but the downward sweep of these fluctuations is usually not severe enough to make you depressed.  It is important however, to seek help if your low mood feels as if it has got stuck and gives you no respite.  Therapy can help you to overcome your low moods more quickly, help you to recognise them early in order to nip them in the bud, and help you to prevent a low mood from attacking you in the first place, by learning to recognise signs and symptoms before they become severe.

Recovery from Psychological Trauma

The Treatment of Major types of trauma include: - Rape and Sexual Abuse (in childhood or adulthood), Stranger Physical Assault, Intimate Partner Violence, Life-Threatening Medical Condition, Witnessing or Being Confronted With the Homicide or Suicide of Another Person, Natural Disasters, and Motor Vehicle Accidents.  I also offer Sexual Abuse Therapy as an ACC Provider, Supplier, and Assessor, for the ACC Sensitive Claims Unit. As a trauma therapist I am able to support you throughout your healing journey by listening to you, by witnessing your pain, by providing empathy and care, by building your skills and strategies to deal with distress, and by assisting you to monitor the pace and length of the steps you take along your personalized path to recovery.

Insomnia & Sleep Stress

If you are having a lot of trouble sleeping, your body may be trying to tell you something about the way you are conducting your life. As with all other mind-body symptoms, this message is worth listening to. Usually it is just a signal that you are going through a stressful time in your life and you can expect that if and when it is resolved, your sleeping pattern will improve by itself. However, If you regularly feel tired during the day and the resultant sleepiness interferes with your daily activities then you may have a problem. Luckily for nine out of ten people the problem is easily solved with therapy.

Eating Disorders

Including treatment for Binge-eating episodes, Recurrent purging behaviour, Restrictive food intake, and Excessive food intake.

Regardless of the nature of your eating related problem if you find that, despite your best efforts, you have been unable to break free from a vicious pattern of compelling behaviours, thoughts and emotions don't despair, help is at hand.

Personality Related Issues

Have you experienced lifelong issues, especially difficulties in relationships, self-esteem and career problems? Therapy can provide you with a useful framework for understanding how these difficulties developed, along with powerful solutions to bring about personal growth and change.

Addictions

Including treatment of Alcohol Related Problems, Substance Use, Gambling and Pornography.  Have you already tried to cut down on your habit but been unable to do so, or have you only succeeded for a short time?   Therapy involves helping you to understand and challenge patterns of behaviour, thoughts and emotions relating to your addiction, with the goal of helping you, to help yourself develop a happier and healthier way of life.

Couple Counselling & Family Relationships

No relationship is always smooth sailing. All relationships have conflict and an excess of negative emotion, so problems in families and intimate relationships affect just about everyone at one time or another, to a normal degree. Notwithstanding, being in an unhappy and distressed partnership is associated with increased rates of depression, anxiety, and substance use, and further children in homes with ongoing conflict are more likely to be troubled. Therapy addresses how to improve your intimate relationship, and in turn your own, your partners, and your family’s well-being.

Stress Management

Stress comes from both outside and inside. Outside stresses reflects the pressure you are under and inside stresses reflect your reaction to these things.  If your demands seem many and your resources seem few, help is available. Therapy may include Diaphragmatic Breathing and Relaxation, Clinical Hypnotherapy, Decision Making, Time Management, Life Changes or addressing Lifestyle Imbalances and Resource Strengthening.

Assertiveness Skills

Assertiveness is a skill based on the idea that your needs, wants, and feelings are neither more or less important than those of other people: they are equally important. The alternatives to assertiveness are either passivity or aggression, neither of which are ultimately satisfactory, both because of the bad feelings they engender and because they are unfair: and in the long run they usually fail to get you what you want. Assertiveness training will set you up to value yourself and trust your own feelings, and enable you to express yourself appropriately, honestly, and clearly in a confident manner.

Loss and Grief

Grief is a normal response to a significant loss including bereavement, financial ruin, losses from a natural disaster, or a serious medical illness or disability, and may include feelings of intense sadness, insomnia, poor appetite and weight loss. If the pain of your grief remains extreme for a number of months, and if it is becoming the only focus in your life you may need professional support to help you to begin to process your grief and find more balance in your life.

Enhancing Self-esteem and/or Self Confidence

Do not think about building your confidence and self -esteem only when you are particularly vulnerable. Think about it when you are buoyant too. Make building your confidence a habit, through learning and applying effective strategies. The more it becomes a habit, a practiced skill, the more secure your inner confidence will be when you really need it.

Life changes including relocation, role changes, retirement and redundancy

Adapting to major changes in your life can be a difficult time that, maybe, you were not prepared for.   If you are struggling to adapt to a new way of being, therapy can offer you support in this process.
